And/Or Gallery Press Release #9
Period: March - June 2007
And/Or Show #9 will feature work by the Netherlands-based JODI new media collective
and Arcangel Constantini, a new media artist living in Mexico City.
This show will be in conjunction with a simultaneous, completmentary exhibition
of JODI's work at VertexList gallery
in New York.
This exhibition runs from May 4th through June 8th. Opening reception is Friday, May 4th 6pm-9pm with a performance at 8pm.
JODI is Joan Heemskerk and Dirk Paesmans and
their work has been screened at film festivals and new media art festivals
around the world. They have also exhibited recently at Pace Wildenstein gallery in New York
and gave a talk at And/Or last year while they were in The United States for presentations at
CinemaTexas in Austin and at the MOMA in New York.
In the mid-ninetees, JODI pioneered deconstructivist net art and
earned their place is most new media art books with this work.
At the end of the nineties they transitioned to work to
software art in purer form and videogame modification,
and we will be showing some of their new work in this field. The new videos makes
use of the The Playstation 2 accessory called the EyeToy Camera
that allows players to interact with specially programmed games
by simply moving in front of the camera.
JODI has taken carefully constructed edits from Hollywood movies and
fed them into the EyeToy camera, forcing a chaotic relationship between the movie
and the games.
Arcangel Constantini
is an accomplished new media artist from Mexico City whose work usually involves net art
or circuit bending -- an artform invented in the eightees by artist Reed Ghazala where
educated, but destructive, circuit modifications are made to sound-based electronic devices.
Arcangel has expanded this field to include modificiation of video equipment as well,
and he will be performing at the opening with his circuit bent video equipment. In addition,
we will be showing some
of his photography-based net art and electro-mechanical artworks.
The opening reception on May 4th will coincide with the opening at VertexList in New York
of JODI's exhibition, and we will have a webcam link between the two openings. JODI will be in attendance
at the New York opening, and Arcangel will be in Dallas. In addition to the performance by Arcangel, we
will have a performance by And/Or's Dallas-based video/music hacker group, Tree Wave
, who has performed and had their videos screened at art spaces and festivals around the world.
